bone brothFrom the beginning of time (well, at least since there’s been fire), man has been eating bone broth. Have you ever wondered why?

I’m sure you remember your mother or grandmother telling you to make sure to eat your chicken soup when you were sick. And likely when you did, you actually felt better. Have you ever wondered why?

I recommend everyone make bone broth and incorporate it into your dietary routine. Here’s why.

1. It heals a leaky gut.

The gelatin in bone broth protects and heals the mucosal lining of the digestive tract and helps aid in the digestion of nutrients.

2. Fights infections such as colds and flu.

A study published in the journal Chest shows eating chicken soup during a respiratory infection reduces the number of white blood cells, which are the cells that cause flu and cold symptoms.

3. Reduces joint pain and inflammation.

The glucosamine in bone broth can actually stimulate the growth of new collagen, repair damaged joints and reduce pain and inflammation.

4. Produces gorgeous skin, hair and nails.

The collagen and gelatin in bone broth supports hair growth and helps to keep your nails strong.

5. Helps with bone formations, growth and repair.

The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in bone broth helps our bones to grow and repair.

6. Saves you money.

Homemade bone broth is cheaper and healthier than store bought.

7. Super easy to make.

All you need is a crockpot. Throw all of the ingredients into the crockpot and it cooks while you sleep.

8. Healthier than buying supplements.

Homemade bone broth contains all nutrients and minerals found in bones and tendons rather than just one or two found in pills. Slow cooking preserves the nutrients better than the high heat extraction used to make supplements.

9. Fights inflammation.

Bone broth is very high in the anti-inflammatory amino acids glycine and proline.

10. Promotes sleep and calms the mind.

The amino acid glycine found in bone broth can be very calming.

Gut-Healing Chicken Broth Recipe

Ingredients:

1 organic whole chicken
8 c of water
4 -6 stalks of celery, finely chopped
½ white or yellow onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 inch ginger root, finely chopped
½ teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon of apple cider vinegar

Directions:

Place all of the above ingredients in a crockpot and cook on low heat for 8 -10 hours.

I like to cook mine until the meat is falling away from the bones.

I make this just before bed and it’s ready and hot for breakfast.

You can store any excess broth in the freezer and defrost for a later time.

candidaCandida is a fungal infection more commonly called thrush. It is caused by a yeast-like fungus Candida Albicans, which lives on the skin, in the mouth, bowel and vagina. Normally the fungus is harmless but sometimes it sets up an infection characterised by some white patches which usually affect the mouth or vagina. In many cases, a bout of thrush follows the taking of a course of antibiotics. This weeks health tip describes a simple test you can do at home to establish whether or not you have a candida infection.
You will need a pint glass of ordinary tap water for this test.

Method – Work up a little saliva, ideally first thing in the morning, and spit onto the surface of the water in the glass.

Indicators
If the glob of spittle remains on the water surface without spreading across the surface then no candida is present.
If the spittle spreads across the surface of the water then candida is present.
If the spittle sends trails hanging below the surface of the water then candida is becoming or is systemic. The further towards the bottom of the glass this shards of saliva travel then the more systemic is the infection.

how-to-treat-ringwormThis highly contagious infection of the skin known commonly as ringworm is also medically called Tinea. The term ringworm is somewhat misleading, since no worm is involved, it is caused by a fungal infection. However, as the infection spreads, inflammation extends in a ring shape, whilst the center reverts to the appearance of normal skin. Ringworm can occur anywhere in the body, but warm, moist areas, such as the armpits, groin, beneath the breasts and the feet are the most common places.

Treatment – Try applications of eucalyptus oil at least twice a day, morning and evening, that usually does the trick.

cold-soresAs you may know, cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex 1 virus which resides in the nasal passages or nerves. If you are a sufferer then you will be well aware just how painful and embarrassing this condition can be. There are of course medical treatments available which are effective in reducing symptoms but do not always provide a cure.

Try this method instead – Using essential oil of Melissa (Lemon Balm Leaf) dab onto the site of the breakout at the first sign of attack. Repeat every 30minutes until they disappear then apply to the inside of the nasal passages three times per day for 3 days. If you do this every time you experience the symptoms you should succeed in vanquishing the causal virus and attacks should no longer occur.

Hot mustard footbath:
For instructions see asthma heath tip post.

Case study
A lady came to see me complaining of a sore throat which was so painful she was unable to swallow and had to take soluble pain killers to get any respite. She had an appointment arranged with her GP for the next morning and was hoping I could suggest something she could do in the meantime. I advised her to try the sage gargle, salt compress and hot mustard foot bath, which she followed to the letter. When she saw her GP the next day the swelling had subsided, she was pain free and able to swallow without discomfort. He was amazed at what she had achieved in such a short time without the need for an antibiotic.

Toothache pain can be extremely distracting and often become a sufferer’s sole area of focus. The time between experiencing toothache pain and seeing an emergency dentist can be excruciating. Tooth pain happens when the nerve is inflamed. Generally this occurs due to compromised enamel which is allowing material to enter directly into the pulp. Here are 12 home remedies for toothache pain.

12 Quick Remedies For Toothache Emergency

Baking Soda

Take a cotton swab and moisten it with a bit of water, dip it in baking soda (coat the swab really well with baking soda) then apply. You can also make a mouth rinse by mixing a heaping spoonful of baking soda in a small glass of lukewarm to warm water, dissolve the soda then swish the mixture in your mouth.

Oil Of Oregano

Mix a few drops with a bit of olive oil, then saturate a cotton ball with mixture. Can replace the olive oil with lukewarm water if preferred.

Salt Water

Salt reduces infection, pain, and inflammation. Warm salt water prevents the infection from spreading to other parts of the mouth. Mix a teaspoon of salt (either unrefined sea salt, Epsom salt, or ordinary salt) and a glass of warm water. Rinse your mouth with the solution.

Garlic

Garlic is nature’s most potent antibiotic. It prevents bacterial infection and contains sulfuric compounds including allicin which fight infection and inflammation. Apply the juice from crushed garlic to the infected area. Repeat regularly as needed.

Olive Oil

Olive oil contains a chemical called eugenol that kills bacteria and reduces pain. Use a cotton ball to apply olive oil to the affected area and sore gums. Repeat daily as needed.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural disinfect that kills bacteria and relieves pain and inflammation. Mix 2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and a tablespoon of warm water. Rinse your mouth with the solution without swallowing.

Cucumber

Slice a fresh piece of cucumber and hold it over the sore area. If refrigerated, you might want to bring the cucumber to room temperature before using (if sensitive to cold) otherwise a cool piece can be soothing. You can also mash a piece with a bit of salt and pack it around the sore tooth.

Wheatgrass

Simply chewing of wheatgrass leaves or using wheatgrass juice as a mouthwash is also helpful in fighting with toothache. Wheatgrass juice absorbs the toxins from gums, reduces bacteria, and avoids contamination.

Tea

Make a fresh cup of tea then take the used tea bag (still warm) and stick it in your mouth. Careful not to tear the bag. The tannins that are naturally in tea leaves can help numb things.

Alcohol

A bit of whiskey, brandy, scotch, or vodka can also be used as a natural home remedy for toothache. A strong mouthwash that contains alcohol will also be helpful.

Onion

Freshly cut onion can be placed on the area. Else, extract the juice of onion and apply on the troubled tooth with a cotton ball. Onion is a natural remedy to fix up the throbbing toothache. Onion is also considered as a natural antibiotic for curing tooth infection.

Cloves

Settle a dry stalk of clove onto the tooth. This is a helpful remedy in fixing up the toothache. A drop of clove oil or thick paste of ground clove with water or olive oil can also be used. Clove oil is an effective natural cure for fixing toothache from a broken tooth.

sinus infectionsThere’s nothing quite like a sinus infection. You get to experience non-stop pressure and pain. Your face hurts. Your head hurts. Possibly, your teeth hurt as well. Left untreated, the infection can involve the bones of the face and in rare cases, can actually spread to the brain.

Our sinuses are open spaces or pockets above and beside the nose that are lined with mucous membranes. Each time we breathe in through the nose, mucus acts as the first defense against pathogens and foreign substances we inhale. Small particles are trapped by mucus, which is continuously swept towards the throat by cilia, tiny hair like structures. Mucus is swallowed and stomach acid neutralizes most of the pathogens that reach it.

Sinuses become infected when they cannot drain properly. When sinus tissues swell, mucus becomes trapped and the sinus fills, causing pressure and pain and creating a perfect environment for an infection to breed.

Sinus infections can be viral, bacterial, fungal or a combination; they can be acute or chronic.

How to avoid sinus infections

If you suffer from recurrent sinus infections or chronic sinus infections, Candida is likely to be a part of the problem. At the very least, you immune system needs help. A truly healthy diet will help heal the infection and rebuild your immune system.

Diet

Eat real food, not processed food. Your diet should consist of 80% raw, fresh, organic produce, more vegetables than fruit. Be sure to include healthy fats. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are an important addition to your diet, and they reduce inflammation. (Reduction of inflammation, and swelling that accompanies it, allows the sinuses to drain. Avoid all artificial flavorings, colorings, and preservatives as well as MSG, trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and GMOs. And here’s what may be the hardest part: stop eating sugar. Sugar feeds Candida as well as viruses and bacteria. In addition, each time you eat sugar, it takes your immune system a good three days to recover.

Avoid all allergens. Many people who aren’t aware that they are allergic to dairy, find that eliminating it from their diet stops a cycle of chronic sinus, respiratory, and ear infections.

Detox

To heal your immune system, you need to cleanse your body. A good cleanse will help kill off Candida, parasites, and pathogens. You need to rebuild the balance of your gut so the healthy bacteria keeps Candida and bad bacteria and the toxins they exude in check. If your sinuses are the only thing your immune system has to deal with, it will do a much better job of healing any current or future infection. (To learn more about how to detox, see the link below.)

Treat sinus infections with irrigation

Flushing the sinuses with saline solution can aid in reduction of swelling and remove excess mucous along with debris and pathogens. A neti pot can aid you in sinus irrigation. To make a saline solution, use 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 16 ounces (2 cups) of warm water.

Be sure that you use the following:

  • Distilled water or boiled water.
  • Real salt, but not sea salt. It can have algae in it. Make sure it is fine and has no additives (no iodine or flavorings).
  • Baking soda without aluminum.

Treating chronic sinus infections

Chronic sinus infections take time to heal, and come back easily if the sinus cavities haven’t fully healed. Anyone who suffers from chronic sinus infections needs to look at radically changing their diet.
